At any given time, there are a million ideas and memories running through interior designer Mally Skok’s head, an enviable trait that served her well during the pandemic slowdown. That’s because those dark, somber days coincided with the beginning of her work on a new (happy, bright) collaboration of fabrics with Stout, the renowned textile, wallpaper, and drapery hardware brand from Philadelphia. Titled Capricorn, the line takes its cues from what the company calls “the essence of colorful, cheerful living that embodies the designer herself.”
“We were in lockdown, so I had lots of time on my hands to draw the patterns,” says Skok, who’s based in Palm Beach. “It was a lovely way to spend my days.”
Comprised of six motifs, the designs are informed by lightness and simplicity, drawn from nature, and inspired by the travels, recollections, and penchants in Skok’s life—and the designer has a backstory for each one. Case in point: Eden, which is based on a summer dress Skok purchased during a Christmas holiday in South Africa. “[It brings back] fond memories of my birthday at our beach house in Plettenberg Bay, celebrating with all of my family,” she says. “A special time for sure.”
The rest of the inventory (available to the trade) is equally personal: Teacup (based on a vintage cup she once purchased), Pots (inspired by the brass lotus flowers she keeps by her fireplace), Tamerlane (a nod to the ancient door coverings found in Eastern Europe), Ikat (simply because she adores the pattern), and Grasslands (reminiscent of a sarong her daughter once gifted her).
“I had such a blast [creating this collection],” says Skok. “We even photographed it in my house, all over the walls. It was a good thing.”
